But the mobilization remains below its possibilities. The teachers’ unions had called for a limited work stoppage, not a one-day strike. According to comrades on the spot, the KKE, the Greek Communist Party, and its youth, the KNE, ensured the shortening of the Athenian demonstration, arousing the anger of participants.
After a government campaign stirring up fears of a French scenario and numerous checks on young people, the police did not charge the procession, despite some friction. The government could seek to avoid a conflagration in the run-up to the commemorations of the1973 Polytechnic uprising on 17 November and the murder of Alexis Grigoropoulos by the police on 6 December.
The next step could come mainly from high school students, who are confronted with the dilapidation of their schools and are less supervised by the KNE than the university students. European mobilizations can feed this dynamic and help anger to go beyond the limits that some leaderships want to impose on it.
