Lyes Touati, a member of the Parti Socialiste des Travailleurs (PST), was arrested yesterday in Aokas (Algeria) and remanded in custody. We do not know the reasons for his arrest or the charges against him.

His arrest follows long-standing police harassment. In particular, he was sentenced to 6 months in prison and fined 10,000 Algerian dinars for posting a quotation from La Boétie on Facebook: ‘They are only great because we are on our knees’. He is also regularly summoned by the police for no serious reason.

In Algeria, activists are regularly accused of undermining national security or colluding with foreigners, in an amalgam with the actions of the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia, which on Sunday declared Kabylia’s independence.

There is no link between the MAK, which is supported by the Moroccan government and which supports Israel, and our comrade Lyes Touati.

The NPA-L’Anticapitaliste, in line with our political current, the Fourth International, which has shown its political and concrete solidarity during the struggle for Algerian independence, demands the immediate release of our comrade and the dropping of charges against him and all those detained for their opinions.
