The RN, had set itself the goal of establishing a stronger local foothold than it had previously. It doubled the number of its lists compared to 2020 and managed to make gains in a large number of towns. It won in 70 towns, 29 of which were secured in the first round. It is noteworthy that in Nice, Retailleau from the mainstream right, did not issue any voting instructions to decide between the fascist Ciotti and the far-right Estrosi in the second round. The union of the right is underway.
Against a backdrop of the trivialisation of racist ideas and the normalisation of fascist splinter groups, this is a warning sign of a possible shift in 2027. The events following the death of Quentin Deranque, the fascist killed in a street fight with antifascists, were a foretaste of the reversal of values orchestrated by the right and Macron’s camp, exploited by a section of the left—notably the Socialists—against the LFI.
These same Socialists are now using the failures of the joint lists in the second round, in Toulouse or Angers, and the victories where such alliances did not take place, such as in Lille, Paris and Marseille, to condemn any future alliance with La France Insoumise. This anti-LFI stance has stifled grassroots momentum, whilst the Socialist electorate aligned with Macron’s camp has managed to mobilise behind candidates who rejected the alliance, as in Paris, Marseille and Lille.
This strategy has contributed to the swing of numerous left-wing strongholds to the right.
Despite the media and political hype against La France Insoumise, its results are significant and strengthen its local base in working-class towns such as Roubaix and La Courneuve.
As for the NPA – L’Anticapitaliste, we are pleased to have been able to participate in around forty slates during these municipal elections, in various united configurations depending on the town, with or without LFI, but always with the aim of uniting against the far right. We have secured a total of twelve elected representatives across as many different municipalities. Our comrades will therefore sit on the municipal councils of Toulouse, Montreuil, Roubaix, Ivry-sur-Seine, Quimper, Alençon, Millau, Voiron, Moissac, Cusset, Gérardmer and Tournissan.
Despite a record abstention rate and an election in which local factors may have been decisive, this vote foreshadows the balance of power a year ahead of the presidential elections.
Given the real risk of the far right coming to power in 2027, the unity of the entire social and political left is an urgent necessity.
From today, the NPA – l’Anticapitaliste is playing its full part in building a united anti-fascist front that begins with the mobilisations and struggles of the social, environmental, feminist and anti-racist movements.
