The Socialist People’s Forum (SPF), Sri Lanka section of the Fourth International, shares the outrage and horror of people of conscience around the world, at the gangsterism of the United States of America (US) in Venezuela on 03 January 2026.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Adela Flores were kidnapped and abducted to New York, following chaos created by US military forces bombing of Caracas and surrounding regions, killing 40 people.

These acts of state terrorism were preceded by months of US militarisation of the Caribbean Sea, allegedly to combat narcotics trafficking, in which dozens of boats were bombed in international waters, killing at least 115 people.

The first Trump regime in 2020 concocted the claim that Maduro and associates including Flores are drug traffickers, to designate them as ‘terrorists’, supposedly authorising intervention by US legal and military agencies. This was a transparent pretext to prepare for removal of Maduro, and execute US designs for control and corporate exploitation of Venezuela’s vast mineral reserves, including oil, bauxite, and coal.

As the Fourth International in its statement of 04 November 2025 observed, “There is an unprecedented warmongering offensive in the region, which must be forcefully rejected by socialists, social activists, and progressive sectors, regardless of what they or we think about the government of Nicolás Maduro, its anti-worker, anti-popular policies, and its anti-democratic drift.”

The SPF demands the National People’s Power (NPP) government break its silence on the criminal acts of naked imperialism by the US in Venezuela and the Caribbean Sea. The State of Sri Lanka, as a member of the United Nations (UN) is duty-bound to defend the UN Charter and principles of international law from being torn up by the US, in this blatant violation of the territorial sovereignty, independence, and democratic rights, of the people of Venezuela.

We appeal to all progressive forces in Sri Lanka, including unions and associations of the working class keeping aside political differences, to unite and mobilise against the escalation of US aggression elsewhere in Latin America including Cuba.

Immediately, the Socialist People’s Forum calls for the broadest support and maximum participation for the protest outside the US embassy in Colombo on Monday 05 January at 4pm, in the first of other actions in opposition to US imperialism.
