Catarina Martins was at the Olhão market on Saturday morning, at a time when the US attack on Venezuela in the early hours of the morning was dominating the political news. When questioned by journalists, Catarina expressed her solidarity with the Venezuelan population and her particular concern for the Portuguese community in that country.

On what the President of the Republic’s response to the event should be, Catarina replied that she should on the one hand make an ‘unequivocal condemnation in defence of international law’, and on the other hand ‘do everything to protect the Portuguese community’ in Venezuela.

‘Portugal does not need to wait for Europe to condemn an operation that violates international law and increases the risk of global war,’ Catarina continued, criticising the fact that many hours have passed since the news of the attacks and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro - who according to Trump has been taken out of the country - and the reaction of both the European Commission and the European Council has been silence.

"It’s essential to have a position so that we realise that just as we can’t accept Vladimir Putin saying he’s going to carry out a special operation because he wants to take Ukraine’s wealth, we can’t accept Donald Trump saying he wants to take Venezuela’s oil and so he enters the country. This is sowing the seeds of global war. I hope that in the next few hours there will be a clear position of condemnation," said Catarina. "European values are the defence of international law, the defence of peace. I am a pro-European and that is why I demand that the EU condemns what is happening and uncompromisingly defends international law," she added.

"Trump ended last year saying he wanted to be a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and this year he’s starting to sow war. What we’re seeing is a clear violation of international law, because Donald Trump wants Venezuelan oil, as he has explicitly said,‘ said the presidential candidate, adding that ’we can’t think it’s normal for a power that wants something from another country to go and do this."
