A group of 42 left-wing parliamentarians released a letter to President Lula criticising the possibility of oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin of the Amazon region.
The text is signed by federal and state deputies and councillors from parties such as PT, PSOL, Rede, PV and PDT.
‘As parliamentarians committed to addressing national and global environmental challenges, we recognise that the expansion of oil exploration in the Amazon biome is incompatible with the urgent demands of the climate crisis and the global shift towards a fair and equitable energy transition,’ the letter says.
The document highlights that Ibama (Environmental authority) technicians have made an assessment against oil exploration. The institute is under pressure from the government, including President Lula, to quickly approve the activity.
‘With all due respect, Mr President, we ask that you heed the recommendations of the experts and suspend oil exploration in the Foz do Amazonas Basin,’ say the parliamentarians in an appeal to Lula.
The legislators also ask the president to prioritise an ambitious energy transition plan for the country.
The issue has become a tug-of-war within the government, with some saying that Brazil cannot do without this resource at this time, and others arguing that oil exploration would be a step backwards.
