Oleksandr Demenko, a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war who defended Mariupol and then spent 20 months in Russian captivity, has just been elected as the new president of the LGBTQ+ military union.

‘His experience as a defender, the captivity he endured and his unshakeable faith in the future make Oleksandr a strong and relevant candidate, capable of representing the interests of the entire LGBTIQ+ military community,’ the organisation explained.

The elections were initiated by the previous president, military doctor Viktor Pylypenko, who had led the association since 2018. Demenko was democratically elected by an absolute majority of votes.

Good news never comes alone, and Demenko received a proposal from his partner Artur on Saturday, 23 August. Now, the couple is considering registering their partnership in Ukraine if Bill No. 9103 is passed.
