The “Draft labour-law reform bill” (the so-called labour package) is a set of more than one hundred regressive amendments to the Portuguese Labour Code presented by the Government of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the CDS – People’s Party (CDS-PP)2, with the support of the Liberal Initiative (IL) and CHEGA, the far-right party. This package constitutes a deliberate and planned programme of rolling back labour rights in Portugal, reviving the offensive launched by Pedro Passos Coelho’s Government during the Troika years (2012–2015)3.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York city mayoral elections has energized the left, enraged Trump (who seems to be trying to coopt him after denouncing him as a “communist” and threatening to cut off federal funding to New York), and stimulated debate on the left regarding independent political action and the use of the Democratic party ballot line.

The first round confirms the shift of the electorate towards right-wing positions —with Kast consolidated as leader of the bloc— in a regional context marked by the expansion of reactionary forces.

The global crisis of capitalism and its ecological dimension are provoking a major political crisis. In the countries of the Global North, and in France in particular, the bourgeoisie is seeking to settle accounts with the post-World War II social compromise, violently and rapidly.

Local and regional elections have been held in Denmark, and the Unity List [known internationally as the Red Green Alliance] has once again become Copenhagen’s largest party. The Social Democrats lost the mayoralty to the Socialist People’s Party and lost ground in 86 of 98 municipalities. The results clearly reflect the national political scene, where the Social Democrats chose to form a majority government with two bourgeois parties in 2022.

The last weekend of November will see a major conference take place in the city of Liverpool in the north west of England. Fronted by former Labour MP Zara Sultana and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and with more than 50,000 sign ups, this will formally launch a new political party. The proto-formation currently has the clumsy, name of Your Party but the membership will at some later point decide whether and how to rename it.

Exhausted by over three years of Russian attacks, Ukrainians are increasingly ready to accept unfair political compromises and harsh territorial concessions to end the war. Yet it’s far from clear that this hard choice will actually bring lasting peace.

Since August, at least 70 people have been killed by strikes by the U.S. armed forces on boats mainly from the Venezuelan coast, in the Caribbean Sea, under the pretext of the fight against narcoterrorism.
