The first round of the French local elections will take place on Sunday 15 March, the second on 22 March. There is a real possibility that the “traditional” right, which is increasingly radicalizing in a far right direction, will win in Paris, under Socialist Party government since 1995, and that the Rassemblement National could win in France’s second, and very multi-racial, city, Marseilles.

This convergence takes place against the backdrop of Trumps’ destructive assault on democratic rights in the US and the sovereignty of nations abroad, most recently his reckless aerial attack on Iran, and plummeting approval ratings in the polls.

It is difficult to realize today, fifty years later, the hope represented throughout the South American continent by the experience of Popular Unity in Chile. The arrival of the Allende government in 1970 opened a new page, a surge of optimism and the perspective of social transformation of the continent, in particular for Brazilian militants who had taken refuge in Chile to flee the Brazilian military dictatorship.

Ernest Mandel was an internationalist and revolutionary activist who combined thought and action throughout his life. In intellectual terms, his extensive theoretical output, his many analyses of the economic and political situation and his numerous articles influenced a large generation of activists, students, researchers and leaders of trade union, social and political organizations, well beyond the Fourth International, which Mandel helped to lead.
