Version imprimableThe agreement, signed on April 30, reflects the desire of American capital to gain unobstructed access to Ukrainian nadr. With this, the Ukrainian side receives significantly fewer rights and opportunities. The document confirmed that the Agreement has an advantage over Ukrainian legislation, which limits the possibility of protection of national interests. American companies will be able to withdraw profits from Ukraine.
All of this is anchored in the conditions when the agreement process is kept in secret, without public discussion. Additional agreements are still not published, and the expert assessment of the project is absent. This undermines the legitimacy of the Agreement and deprives society of the right to influence fateful decisions and crosses the management of own land and gutters.
The agreement also sets the course in Ukraine’s economic policy on a raw material model - instead of the development of technology or industry, it is primarily about the extraction of resources. Social and environmental aspects are completely ignored. Neither trade unions nor environmental organizations were involved in the discussion.
Finally, the agreement is presented as a security tool, but does not guarantee anything specific: US assistance remains conditional and politically vulnerable. At the same time, it forms the impression that Ukraine has lost control over its own resources.
This is not a disaster, but a disturbance call. The only way to make a difference is to build a truly democratic, socially oriented economy, where the people control resources, and international partnership is based on equality, not subordinacy.
