It’s essential to change the production-based agricultural system, which is driven by petrochemicals, destroys jobs and exacerbates the ecological crisis. We need small-scale farming on a human scale, that creates jobs and generates income, produces high-quality food and supports living organisms. This alternative is a bulwark against bio-aggressors and climate change. To achieve this, we recommend:
1- Providing farmers and agri-food workers with better working conditions and incomes;
2- Developing short production, processing and distribution circuits, with production workshops and local markets under the control of producers, to enable the reconstitution of a local economic fabric destroyed by the agri-food industries and supermarkets;
3- Restoring food-producing belts around towns and cities, to combat land artificialisation and enable urban dwellers to reconnect with the natural rhythms of production;
4- Feeding people healthily with organic and ecological products. No hectares of heated greenhouses producing organic vegetables, no production or breeding that relies on the labour of abused farm workers, no above-ground breeding whose food comes from the other side of the world;
5- Drastically reducing meat consumption;
6- Using healthy local produce in the catering sector;
7- Introducing a different type of cooperative land management system that treats land as a common asset, combining the right to use it with the duty to care for it;
8- Developing initial and continuing vocational training in agriculture, to encourage retraining and keep the petrochemical lobbies at bay;
9- Developing research where farmers and researchers work together.
