Moïse, elected with U.S. backing in November 2016, had exploited an alleged loophole in Haiti’s constitution that states the duration of the presidential term is five years. Moïse was subsequently attacked and killed in his home on 7 July, in circumstances which have still not been fully clarified. Arvind Dilawar of Jacobin spoke to Kim Ives, editor of Haïti Liberté about the protests, before Moïse’s assassination.
