It is clear that we are about to experience a massive social crisis far beyond anything experienced thus far in Pakistan. Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement is announcing an emergency #LabourReliefCampaign to help vulnerable workers.

We have confirmed information that factories in Gajjumatta and Quaid e Azam Industrial Estate in Lahore have fired contractual workers effective as of today. Even if salaried workers have been promised that they will be paid next month, many of them still have not received their salaries for February or March. The situation is similar across Lahore, Faisalabad and other major cities in Punjab. [1]

Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement is announcing an emergency #LabourReliefCampaign to help vulnerable workers. Over the past few days, we have compiled a list of worker families in dire need of aid. We will provide them food rations and raise awareness on the Coronavirus.

Labour Relief Campaign would mainly be focusing on those who have been left alone by the state at this moment of crisis. One of our main demands through this campaign is that high-quality free treatment and test should be provided to all those who are showing symptoms of Coronavirus.

This is not charity. This is social solidarity to those whose labour makes our society run. It is to recognize that they are not disposable in moments of crisis, that their lives matter more than the petty profits of a few industrialists. This is why as part of our campaign, we will highlight the abusive practices of companies and stress the need for government intervention.

When the powerful have abandoned the people in their moment of despair, the people must unite to build a world of compassion and solidarity. This necessary work begins from today.
