Mohammed Harbi (1933—2026) was an Algerian Marxist historian and anti-colonial militant. A cadre of the FLN during the Algerian war of independence and promoter of workers’ self-management, he was imprisoned after the 1965 coup and lived in exile in France from 1973. He became one of the foremost historians of Algerian nationalism, publishing landmark works including Le FLN, mirage et réalité (1980, reissued by Syllepse, 2024) and L’Autogestion en Algérie : Une autre révolution ? (2022). He died on 1 January 2026 at the age of 92.
