President Donald Trump, breaking with U.S. norms, is using the Justice Department to pursue his political enemies, going after liberal and progressive foundations and NGOs, and sending more troops to another American city to intimidate protestors. He has fired Justice Department attorneys who are unwilling to put his orders above the law and replaced them with flunkeys who will carry out his demands. He has promised “retribution” to his high-level political opponents and is now meting it out. And he is also targeting the political left, saying he will designate Antifa, that is the anti-fascist movement as a domestic terrorist organization, though there is no antifa organization and no legal designation for domestic terrorism. To carry out his campaign against Antifa he is sending troops to Portland, Oregon.

The current times, with the rise of the far right and genocidal wars, mark an era where the contradictions of the current system of production, distribution, and consumption demonstrate that we are in a higher stage of the already characterised civilisational crisis. However, this is not just another of Capitalism’s cyclical crises. The metabolic rupture, this irreparable breach in the natural cycle of exchange between human society and nature, challenges human beings’ ability to provide responses compatible with the acceleration of socio-environmental destruction.

SÃO PAULO - Spring in the Southern Hemisphere began a day early in Brazil. On Sunday, 21 September, around 100 cities across the country – including the capitals São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Porto Alegre, Recife and Brasília – witnessed something unprecedented in the last three years: activism, the left and social movements took to the streets and squares, alongside a broader popular sector, equally outraged by two measures voted on by the Chamber of Deputies. The demonstrations in São Paulo and Rio were the strongest since the mobilizations for Fora Bolsonaro (Bolsonaro Out) between 2021 and 2022, and the celebration of Lula’s victory on Paulista Avenue in October 2022.
