Starbucks Workers Continue Strike for Union Contract
15 December, by Dan La BotzThousands of Starbucks workers continue their fight for a union contract with strikes and rallies across the country. The latest strike began on November 13 and continues off-and-on at stores across the country. In mid-December some 3,800 Starbucks baristas were on strike at more than 180 stores in over 130 cities. The union, Starbucks Workers United claims a total 14,000 members at about 650 stores.

A last farewell to Mick Woods

But its not only in Britain and Denmark that Mick is mourned - the proudest achievement of his political life was his involvement in International Workers’ Aid, a campaign of practical solidarity with multi-ethnic Bosnia. The tribute below, from Ulf B Andersson from Swedish Workers’ Aid, was read at his funeral by former Danish MEP Søren Sondergaard who first met Mick through the campaign. The second piece was written for his memorial meeting in London, also addressed by Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell by Danish comrade Lone Degn. Catalonia’s independence movement :A strategic assessment
5 September 2018read article...After more than two million people in Catalonia voted to declare independence from the Spanish state in October 2017, the state struck back. The Spanish central government, under the conservative President Mariano Rajoy, dissolved the Catalán government and charged its leaders with crimes of rebellion against the state. Rajoy called new elections in Catalonia for December 2017. In the results of those elections, the pro-independence parties took the small majority of a sharply polarized electorate. The independence movement, the Catalán government, and the Spanish state are currently locked in an impasse.

Petition to lift the block on the defence of Samir Larabi’s doctoral thesis

Samir LARABI, a doctoral student in the Sociology Department of Abderahmane Mira University in Béjaia (Algeria), has been subjected to repeated obstructions for 29 months, following abusive refusals by the rectoral administration to allow him to defend his doctoral thesis. Validated by his research supervisor, the validity of his thesis has been confirmed three times by the scientific bodies of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Despite validation by the faculty’s Scientific Committee of the changes imposed by the rectoral administration, the latter persists in refusing to allow him to defend his thesis.
