The snap election called by British Prime Minister Theresa May to give her a mandate for Brexit negotiations and confirm her “strong and stable” leadership and parliamentary majority has turned out quite differently. The Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn dramatically increased its vote share and number of seats on the basis of a vigorous and popular anti-austerity campaign. Although Theresa May still leads the party with the most seats in parliament she wil only lead a minority government with no guarantee of a parliamentary majority. Socialist Resistance published this first reaction to the results.

1 June 2017, byIn its editorial, issued on Sunday May 7, the revolutionary organisation Marea Socialista (Socialist Tide), which is identified with what is known in Venezuela as “critical Chavismo” evaluates the situation in the country over the last few days, highlighting the occurrence of deaths and looting in the midst of violent protests with a violent response from security forces employed by the government. In response to the governmental call for a Constituent Assembly, this movement expresses its disagreement, considering that it is not called on the basis of clear universal civic participation and because it appeals to the consultative referendum provided for in Article 71 that distinguished the Constituent Assembly of 1999. Here is the full editorial.
