The first year of Donald Trump's return to the US presidency has accelerated an ongoing transformation: the disintegration of US-led neoliberal globalisation. From the 1990s through the post-2008 period, global capitalism was organised through a structured hierarchy, with US financial dominance, global value chains, and multilateral institutions that secured the conditions for capital accumulation. That architecture is now visibly fraying.

India's “Cockroach” youth movement has now forced the resignation of the country's education minister. What began as a single-issue protest mobilization has broadened into one of the biggest challenges Narendra Modi has faced in power.

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election was possibly the most important, not just for the province of West Bengal, but with an all-India significance. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies had found in the 2024 Parliamentary elections that they had gone over the peak and were in a decline. With the bulk of India's TV channels and much of the print media owned by a small number of houses all aligned with dominant capitalist groups that support the Modi government, the predictions had been for a massive BJP and NDA sweep. Some Exit Polls even gave them close to 400 seats in the 543 member parliament. In reality the BJP won 240 seats, less than a majority, and even with all its allies it had just 293 seats. It was evident that the fascist chariot was slowing down.

The US war against Venezuela has moved from the covert to the open stage. US armed forces have bombed Caracas, and according to the US President Trump, they have kidnapped the Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife. This unprovoked assault comes after a prolonged period of imperialist aggression with economic sanctions and murderous strikes against boats in the Caribbean Sea, killing more than 100 people in the past few months.

On China's initiative, the Tianjin Summit was held on 31 August and 1 September 2025, within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). India was invited to attend. Sushovan Dhar, a political activist and trade unionist in Kolkata, analyses the summit's proceedings and geopolitical implications in this interview. He also examines the nature of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's regime, the link between the climate, democratic and social crises plaguing the country, and the state of the parliamentary and radical left.

Many perceive the BRICS countries as a counterweight to the dollar-dominated monetary order. However, the facts speak for themselves: at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro (6–7 July 2025), no real desire to break away from the US currency was expressed. De-dollarisation remains a distant prospect.
