“In Mexico, we can consider that Trump is announcing military operations similar to those he is carrying out against Venezuela. Since the start of his second term, the US president has been threatening to carry out military operations on Mexican territory against the drug cartels.”

The Mexican right, backed by oligarchic sectors and the open applause of Donald Trump, is trying to capitalize on social discontent to destabilize the government of Claudia Sheinbaum. Although their ability to mobilise remains limited, the danger is real. The only effective barrier remains the deepening of the project of transformation and the building of an autonomous social movement capable of confronting the fascist threat.

“The Zapatista Army of National Liberation chose differently. From the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico's Indigenous revolutionaries issued an uncompromising condemnation of the invasion that prioritised solidarity with grassroots resistance over geopolitical convenience. Their position—supporting Ukrainian resistance and Russian anti-war movements whilst rejecting both Putin and NATO—offered a radical alternative to the campist logic that dominated leftist discourse across Latin America and in Spain. When Israel launched its assault on Gaza in October 2023, the Zapatistas applied the same ethical framework, condemning those who "justified Putin's invasion of Ukraine citing 'self-defense' but now invalidate that argument against Israel, and vice versa."”

Books about historical topics can sometimes be a bit difficult. Often, the list of names, facts, anecdotes, and dates is so long that the reader risks getting lost. Moreover, the reasons behind events are not always very clear, nor always explained in a way that is easy to understand.

DONALD TRUMP'S SECOND victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, with more social and legislative power and experience than his first presidency from 2017 to 2021, is a political milestone that has shaken the world because of what the arrival of such a reactionary, toxic and malignant character to the White House in Washington represents for the world — and specifically for Mexico, the direct southern neighbor of the North American power.

By a more than two-to-one margin, on June 2, 2024, voters in Mexico elected Claudia Sheinbaum, a protégé of outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to the nation's highest office, the first woman and the first Jew to hold the post. She ran as the candidate of AMLO's Morena party. Under AMLO, Morena (the Spanish acronym for the National Regeneration Party) stood on the left of the Mexican political spectrum, a populist party with a leader who spoke in a nationalist voice to the masses, but in an authoritarian manner—though AMLO's administration never had anything like the more anti-democratic character of Daniel Ortega's dictatorship in Nicaragua or of Nicolás Maduro's repressive government in Venezuela. Unlike those countries, where the constitutions were changed to permit the presidents to stay in power, the Mexican Constitution still prohibits reelection to the presidency, though AMLO may seek to continue to exercise power through his successor.
