Globally, the left faces a strategic debate on how to respond to the current reactionary surge. The answer depends on how we characterise the period, what we understand by the extreme right, and what kind of political unity we deem necessary to confront it. In Argentina, the discussion is gaining prominence given the gradual decline of Milei's government. Before examining the Argentine case, however, it is worthwhile considering the global scale of the phenomenon.

A banner at the World Cup reopened a debate that goes beyond the Malvinas/Falklands issue. Faced with an internationalism that underestimates imperial hierarchies and an anti-imperialism that erases the class struggle, the left needs to recover a democratic conception of nation, sovereignty, and internationalism.

“Even defeating Milei in the 2027 presidential elections would be significant. It would concretely demonstrate that, whether through insurrection or the ballot box, the far right can be defeated. And if the anti-capitalist left plays a decisive role in these movements, it would serve as an example for the left internationally.”

“In these notes, we address South America, where the complexity of societies, scandalous socioeconomic inequality, the presence of a so-called “middle” economy with its own influence in the region (Brazil), a tradition of struggle and organization on the left, and governments less subservient than the liberal right (such as those of Colombia, Brazil, and Uruguay), imperialist interventionism faces more obstacles and has to moderate its attacks. In light of important electoral processes and tests in the class struggle posed by far-right and right-wing governments, such as those in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Ecuador, it is worth considering the commonalities across national contexts in the region in the coming months.”

In September 2025, after having presided over the country since December 2023, the neo-fascist Javier Milei suffered an electoral defeat in an important vote. The result was the election in the province of Buenos Aires. This election renewed 46 seats in the provincial Chamber of Deputies and 23 in the provincial Senate. The Peronist opposition beat Milei's party by 13 points and holds a majority in the Buenos Aires Provincial Senate. The capital province represents about 37-38% of the national electorate. The provincial elections in Buenos Aires always serve as a major test at the national level, including for Javier Milei this year.
