What the “Flamingo Revolution” reveals

For more than a week, the European media have been regularly relaying images of Albania, usually absent from the Western press: thousands of demonstrators, flags or placards in hand, can be seen in the streets of Tirana or elsewhere. They have been gathering incessantly since 30 May 2026 against planned tourism projects in Zvërnec, near the Narta Lagoon, as well as on the island of Sazan. Beyond the ecological issues, the barbed wire installed on the coast against which activists are pressing has become, for the people, the symbol of a major political issue: that of the progressive dispossession of their territory and future.

Tuesday, December, 4 was a normal day in Albania. The news went out that the students of the Faculty of Architecture were boycotting school. The reason was a governmental decision to charge students approximately 30 Euros for each postponed exam. The news spread like wildfire in each faculty of the public universities of Tirana.

Albanian students are protesting en masse against a new hike in tuition fees in one of the poorest countries of the continent. While the medium wage in Albania is 350 euros per month, the tuition fees can go up to 2000 euros per year. Government wanted to make students pay for retake exams but it was forced to retreat to try to calm down the movement. But it seems not enough.
