‘My family is safe': the Turkish regime's crackdown on LGBTI+ people

A new milestone was reached in the Erdoğan regime's homophobic crackdown on Sunday 13 September. Police forces launched a large-scale operation against LGBTI+ organisations and activists, as well as organisations campaigning against HIV/AIDS. Raids were carried out in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, amongst other places. The Ministry of Justice states that the operation, dubbed “My family is safe”, involves a total of 162 people, nine organisations and thirteen premises across fifteen provinces.

On 4 April 2026, on the occasion of the anniversary of the founding of NATO, the Global Anti-Militarist Webinar was held, organised by the “No to NATO” initiative, created following the appeal of the Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP), in which members of the Fourth International are active. Bringing together speakers from several dozen countries and nearly 200 participants, this webinar called for the organization of an International Anti-Imperialist Peace Summit in June 2026, in response to the summit of this criminal organization planned in Turkey. This year's Newroz festival in Diyarbakir drew huge crowds with one hope: to finally find a political solution to the decades-long conflict in the Kurdish region. A Newroz message from the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan, was broadcast over the loudspeakers, something that had not happened for several years, as Öcalan has been in total isolation. The portrait of the charismatic PKK president was everywhere, which was not previously allowed. So was the portrait of Selahettin Demirtas, former chair of the HDP party (now DEM). Negotiating a ceasefire is no simple matter.
