On 8 July, 2020 a videoconference was broadcast by Viktor Orbán, Janez Janša and Aleksandar Vu?i?, respectively the heads of government of Hungary, Slovenia and Serbia. The moderator, François-Xavier Bellamy, was the leader in the European Parliament (EP) of the French right-wing party Les Républicains (LR), which. like the parties of the Hungarian and Slovenian leaders, is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) . They defended a Europe “without censorship” which protects itself from “foreigners” (and LGBT people).

 <dc:subject>Covid-19 Pandemic</dc:subject>

Rarely given any space in international media, Slovenia has recently been filling the (web)pages of newspapers like Le Monde, The Guardian, Courrier International and the BBC. Reports were about thousands of people protesting on bicycles against the new right-wing government, led by Janez Janša and his Slovenska demokratska stranka (SDS - Slovenian Democratic Party). They are known internationally for their ideological, political and financial links to Viktor Orbán's Fidesz. Under the guise of fighting the coronavirus, the Slovenian government combined strict public health measures (broadly supported by the public) with a vicious attack on public institutions, journalists, NGOs and practices of formal democracy.

As we know, the left-wing parties of Western Europe, such as the German party Die Linke, play a folkloric role or, in the best of cases, that of a moral corrector and have very little influence on political events. Their parliamentary work is mostly limited to agitation. In Eastern European countries, these parties often fail to enter Parliament.

A new electoral consultation took place in Slovenia on Sunday 3 June 2018. The ultra-right conservatives of Janez Jansa gained the highest number of votes with 24,96 % It is followed by another right party that won 12,66 %. This important score is largely due to anti-migrant demagogy. But this election result is not enough to have a majority government and if he wants to be in power, Janez Jansa will have to find partners from the multitude of small parties, including the anti-islamic party that obtained 4,20 % of the vote. [It would be an exaggeration to call Jelin?i?'s party fascist. Janša's party certainly has neo-fascist features and even originates from Slovene interwar fascism, but it would be anachronistic to describe it as such.] Meanwhile there are events that can provide hope. The Levica party (The left) won 9,29 %. This is to be compared with the 9,92 % gained by the social-democrat party. Lucien Perpette asked Marko Krzan, a militant of Levica to comment on these elections :

For many liberal spectators, Slovenia was for a long time considered a success story of transition from a ‘socialist dictatorship' into a ‘parliamentary democracy' based on a market economy. In the winter of 2012, however, mass popular uprisings swept through the larger cities and eventually brought down the far-right neoliberal government of the Slovenian Democratic Party. What followed was more or less a continuation of the same policies under a nominally ‘centre-left' government. In a similar way that Tony Blair could be considered Margaret Thatcher's greatest achievement, the technocratic approach to dealing with the manifold crisis devastating Slovenian society in general and the historical achievements of labor movement in particular, has become the universal language spoken by all political forces, often including those of organized labor. It seems, considering the socio-economic situation in the entire European periphery, that the subsumption of all spheres of society under the profit-driven rule of capitalist accumulation has only really begun for Slovenia.
