On 26th August part of a glacier and the stone layers beneath it on the northern slope of Langtang Lirung in the Nepal-Tibet border [Tibet is today an “autonomous region” of China] collapsed. The ice and rock avalanche falling down from this nearly 7200 metre mountain was so powerful that its impact created a seismic signal equivalent to a 5.2 Richter scale earthquake. The debris flow then traversed nearly 100 kilometres via Lende Khola river to the Bhote Koshi- Trishuli river system. Villages have been destroyed, the principal road connecting Nepal with China has been isolated, and at least 6 hydel power centres have been damaged according to the news received till now over 500 deaths have been reported from Nepal and Tibet and nearly 2000 people are still untraced.

The countries of the Arabic-speaking region experienced floods last winter (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Oman, Saudi Arabia). Six months later, the region is experiencing extreme temperatures: from 40° to 50° in the Maghreb and 50° and more in Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula, with an average of 35° in Gaza (meaning 50° in tents). Deaths due to the heatwave are estimated to be in the hundreds in Tunisia.

“Overcoming the social and environmental problems that afflict us and reversing the reversible effects of the climate crisis is impossible under the rules of this economic system. The climate crisis is perhaps the most dramatic example. It is not possible to address the climate crisis without making the energy sector—as well as water management—public property and administering it democratically with the dual objective of satisfying our needs and reducing environmental impact. ”

Has Europe's climate changed radically? Asia's oceans are also breaking heat records: What does this mean for extreme weather events?

“It's hot. For some, it's just a matter of temperature. For the working class, however, it's already a matter of health and finances: less income, higher prices, greater vulnerability. “The severe heat wave sweeping across Europe threatens people's health, their livelihoods, and their ability to work,” Jessie Ruth Schleypen, a climate economist at Climate Analytics, told Bloomberg.”

As Europe endures its second spring heatwave of the year, the established powers are not confronting capital's grip on energy, finance, and agriculture — they are tightening it. Daniel Tanuro, Belgian ecosocialist and author of The Impossibility of Green Capitalism, argues that what is happening is not accidental but systemic: fossil investment grows, G7 leaders congratulate climate deniers, and even the European Commission dismantles its own inadequate green measures. The Holocene is over; (…)

Cyclone Senyar has caused deadly floods and landslides in several Indonesian provinces. The toll looks set to be very heavy, and the government's (non-)risk prevention policy is once again under scrutiny.
A week after the cyclone passed, it is still impossible to measure the full extent of the devastation in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. At least 961 people have lost their lives, with nearly 300 still missing, over 156,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, (…)
