“The future of Hungary is in the hands of the thousands of young people who, since Sunday night, have invaded the streets of Budapest, in the civil society that is mobilizing and organizing, in the possibility that they will not stop there and not be satisfied with Magyar's victory.”

The Hungarian legislative elections of 12 April 2026 brought to an end sixteen years of uninterrupted rule by Viktor Orbán. Péter Magyar's Tisza (Respect and Freedom [Tisztelet és Szabadság]) party won a super-majority of 138 seats out of 199, inflicting on Fidesz a defeat explained by judicial scandals, saturation of the identitarian discourse, a generational fracture, and the concrete effects of the freeze on European funds.

On 16 March 2025 the Hungarian parliament, dominated by prime minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party, voted to ban the Budapest Pride March. Already, in 2021, under the pretext of “child protection”, any propaganda for homosexuality (which can be holding hands for a couple, or having a “look” identified as queer) was banned and punished with a 500 euro fine.

In the recent Hungarian general election in April 2022, the ruling coalition, composed of Prime Minister Victor Orban's Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People's Party, won 50% of the vote. Another far-right, neo-Nazi party, the Our Homeland Movement, won 5%. What characterizes these parties and how did we get to this point?

 <dc:subject>Covid-19 Pandemic</dc:subject>

“In the case the political space is opened up by an electoral change in 2022, it is likely to remain dominated by a rearrangement of inter-capitalist conflicts and alliances, without significant influence from popular self-organization, and seriously contained by the privatization measures Fidesz is currently pursuing the protection of its economic dependants. However, a possible post-pandemic crisis might induce more serious ruptures in the capitalist regime built up by Fidesz.”

On 8 July, 2020 a videoconference was broadcast by Viktor Orbán, Janez Janša and Aleksandar Vu?i?, respectively the heads of government of Hungary, Slovenia and Serbia. The moderator, François-Xavier Bellamy, was the leader in the European Parliament (EP) of the French right-wing party Les Républicains (LR), which. like the parties of the Hungarian and Slovenian leaders, is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) . They defended a Europe “without censorship” which protects itself from “foreigners” (and LGBT people).

One of the laws voted on by the Viktor Orban government during the pandemic makes mandatory a “sex at birth” rubric on official identification documents. This makes legal gender recognition impossible, violently ruling against trans and gender non-conforming persons' right to exist. Tina Kolos serves as vice-president of Transvanilla Transgender Association – the only active NGO focusing only on trans issues in Hungary. They have kindly answered our questions about the effects of the law in Hungary, the trans community's fight against it, and the broader associational landscape in which Transvanilla carry out legal and social work.
