The United Nations has drawn up a new death toll following the capture of Goma, the regional capital of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), by the M23 armed group supported by Rwandan troops. Nearly 3,000 deaths have already been recorded. The Tanzania summit bringing together the countries of the region was held on Saturday 8 February. It called for a ceasefire, which appears highly hypothetical.

This was US President Joe Biden's first and last trip to Africa, just a few weeks before the end of his mandate. His visit to Angola at the beginning of December was not insignificant, as the country is the centrepiece of a major investment for the USA and the European Union (EU): the Lobito Corridor. The Lobito Corridor project, from Zambia to Angola, is part of a heightened inter-imperialist competition for control of Africa's critical resources.

By relying on armed militias against the M23 rebellion, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is worsening the already dramatic human rights situation in the eastern part of the country. This rebellion is steadily increasing its area of influence, and is currently capable of blockading the regional capital Goma, which has a population of around two million.
