Confrontation looming on Brexit

Theresa May resigned as leader of the Tory Party on June 7 having failed to win majority support in the British parliament for the agreement she had negotiated with the other EU member states on the terms of Britain's withdrawal. The Tory party subsequently carried out an election for a new leader which resulted in the most rightwing candidate, Boris Johnson, being declared the winner on July 23 and inaugurated as Prime Minister on July 24. The Corbyn project is in crisis. The EU elections results were a disaster for Labour, brought about by a major failure by the Corbyn leadership. It was an election that Labour could have won and within the terms of the policy agreed by conference last year, but this policy was repeatedly watered down by the front bench.

So May, with her cabinet falling to pieces around her and the 1922 Committee pulling the rug from underneath her, has at last accepted the inevitable and announced her resignation. She chose to do this as the Commons goes into recess and in advance of the European EU election results on Sunday that are going to be devastating for the Tories.

The Brexit Crunch

Since the EU elites rejected May's Chequers proposals on the basis that they breach the fundamental principles of the EU; i.e. the internal market and free movement, the likelihood of a disorderly (no deal) exit from the EU has increased along with support for a second referendum on the issue. In Scotland, it has resulted not only in a surge of support for the SNP and for Scottish independence (with some polls showing a majority for the first time) but also for a second referendum on independence which could well become unstoppable – which was reflected in the huge pro-independence demonstration in Edinburgh on 6 October.

A stunning result for Corbyn and Labour

The snap election called by British Prime Minister Theresa May to give her a mandate for Brexit negotiations and confirm her “strong and stable” leadership and parliamentary majority has turned out quite differently. The Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn dramatically increased its vote share and number of seats on the basis of a vigorous and popular anti-austerity campaign. Although Theresa May still leads the party with the most seats in parliament she wil only lead a minority government with no guarantee of a parliamentary majority. Socialist Resistance published this first reaction to the results.
