A book that reads almost like a thriller

Originally published in French and in Greek in March 2020 under the title Capitulation entre Adultes, the book will be available in English before the end of 2020. The book looks back at Syriza coming to power in Greece in January 2015 and the ensuing six months, marked as they were by stark confrontation between the new Greek government and the European Union. As scientific coordinator of the debt audit, alongside the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Éric Toussaint had a grandstand view of events. He criticises the government's policies and explains that there was plenty of scope for different strategies.

Philippe Poutou, spokesperson of the NP, led a broad list of trade-unionist and local activists in the local election campaign in Bordeaux to a striking 11.7% score on 15 March. This means it can stand in the second round which, originally scheduled one week later for 22 March, will now be held in June at a date to be announced.

The Macron government decided to maintain the first round of the local elections on 15 March although school closures had already been announced and full lockdown was to come just a day later. This much-criticized decision led to a number of cases of Covid-19 infection and deaths among those who staffed polling stations, including at least three local mayors. [IVP]

It is a human drama which today plunges families into mourning. But most of the candidates have used this to raise all kinds of fears by characterizing this as an act of war, of Islamist barbarism.

Destroy them!” A shocking, violent and warlike statement which recalls the tone of Vladimir Putin. A statement which is also somewhat imprudent in its peremptory aspect. Because in a game verbal escalation events unleash a process whereby, alas, hostages are frequently added to hostages. The tragic taking of hostages at the gas site in Tigantourine, in Algeria, which sickens us all, has provided a dramatic illustration of this.
