The last days of August saw the 14th edition of the Summer University of Anticapitalistas with the slogan ‘A new internationalism in the face of war and climate barbarism' with the just over 750 people attending. This year there was a significant increase in the number of young people as a result of the work to establish the student movement, the role played in promoting solidarity with Palestine and the intervention around the queer question.

“Once again, in the Spanish labyrinth, class contradictions and positions and identities around the national question are intertwined. The best way to confront the reactionary right and pro-business progressivism is to generate a dynamic of autonomous mobilization, which lays the foundations for a reconstruction of an independent political field from the working class and the oppressed.”

The creation of Podemos in the Spanish state represented a significant attempt to build a mass, anti-neoliberal, and pluralistic party to the left of social liberalism. That experiment, which began very well, ultimately ended very badly. Perhaps for this reason, the title of this article could have been “The Rise and Fall of Podemos… as an Emancipatory Political Project.” The aim of this article is to explain why it was necessary to create Podemos and why it has been necessary to abandon it.

 <dc:subject>European Union</dc:subject>
 <dc:subject>Covid-19 Pandemic</dc:subject>

The response of European community institutions has come late, after several weeks of uncontrollable advance of the coronavirus disease, the palpable (and irresponsible) uncoordinated action of governments and the confirmation of the start of an economic recession that, although already likely before Covid19, is now already an obvious fact. And this at a time when we can say that, more than ever, international cooperation is needed to ward off the dangers of a global crisis of a still unknown scope.

 <dc:subject>Covid-19 Pandemic</dc:subject>

After the success of the popular initiative to “reunite” local neighbourhoods through singing from the windows of houses in many Italian streets and cities, the proposal arose in different networks in the Spanish state to supportively applaud health professionals, fighters in the front line against the corona virus Covid19. Immediately proposals arose to extend this to all those who work in that front and in care work, whatever their role, at the same time that slogans in support of public health and against cuts were raised. In parallel, through informal networks and by more conventional means in Portugal, a similar initiative arose that could be summarized in the motto “Todos somos SNS” (“We are all SNS” - the initials of the country's national health system, also at risk). In both countries the initiative has been a success.

At the time of this speech, the new “progressive” government of the Socialist Party and Unidas Podemos had not yet won a parliamentary mandate. But Manuel Garí, who along with Anticapitalistas, was a founding member of Podemos in 2014, had a number of pointed criticisms of Podemos' trajectory as well as analyses of the new government's likely direction.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the foundation in Portugal of the Bloco de Esquerda (BE – Left Bloc), which was created as a unique political movement and not as a unified political party or as a coalition. Its constitution and evolution, for those of us who have closely followed this experience with interest and passion from other political contexts, is paradigmatic. A unique experience that is not free of paradoxes, challenges and risks. A revolutionary left that does not want to limit itself to a testimonial practice and self-affirmation has to reflect on these.
