The Bolsonaro government in Brazil is a huge catastrophe and a dangerous threat: ineffectiveness in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, disastrous international relations, a deliberate anti-environmental line, attacks on democratic institutions, human rights and the (precarious) gains of civilization. Its policy towards indigenous peoples is genocidal in nature. Even before the pandemic, its economic policy had failed. Brazil is the second most affected country in the world in number of Covid-19 cases and deaths, behind only the United States, with more than 125,000 deaths. The picture could be even worse, but Bolsonaro has been prevented by court rulings from imposing his line.

Reactions to Lula's conviction

On January 24, the Regional Court of Brazil's Fourth Region confirmed the conviction of former President Lula for corruption, in a case concerning the alleged ownership of an apartment in Guarujá (SÃ£o Paulo). Lula became ineligible from running for political office under a law promulgated by his own government. And he can now be arrested. There are several other lawsuits against Lula, which are still ongoing. There is no doubt that there was corruption in his government (as in all other Brazilian governments in recent decades). And there is no doubt that Lula was involved, and there must be some evidence against him.

The world is witnessing with perplexity the political, legal and media coup, called in Brazil “the institutional coup”, which reached its culminating point during the vote which took place in the national legislative chamber on April 17, 2016, for the approval of the opening of the process of the impeachment against President Dilma Rousseff. We are witnessing the sad end of the era of Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores - PT) government, the result of the trajectory that they have taken since Lula's first term as president. It sent signals to the markets and the right, and sought to assemble a coalition government where all interests and social classes would be represented. Its first major initiative was the “reforma da PrevidÃªncia”, the reform of unemployment insurance, of a clearly neoliberal character. Its policy has demobilised the social base of popular support for the PT and strengthened the sectors which today have turned their backs on it.
