“The turning point that this congress represents in the history of the NPA also comes at a political moment in which the terrain on the French left is moving and which demands political reflection, tactical flexibility and capacity for dialogue with the other political forces. ”

 <dc:subject>New parties of the left</dc:subject>

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the foundation in Portugal of the Bloco de Esquerda (BE – Left Bloc), which was created as a unique political movement and not as a unified political party or as a coalition. Its constitution and evolution, for those of us who have closely followed this experience with interest and passion from other political contexts, is paradigmatic. A unique experience that is not free of paradoxes, challenges and risks. A revolutionary left that does not want to limit itself to a testimonial practice and self-affirmation has to reflect on these.

The sector of workers who worked was residual and the 30 per cent of minimal services imposed by the governments did not make it possible to give the impression of normality that they sought. More than that, in the transport sector, the requisitioned workers circulated while announcing: “We are on strike — minimum service”. Only the banks showed some activity on the inside, but the establishments remained closed to the public.

In spite of the catastrophic results of the parliamentary elections in Spain on November 20, 2011 (an absolute majority for the Popular Party) some good news was brought by the vote (333,624) obtained by the nationalist coalition Amaiur (made up of members of the former Batasuna and the parties Eusko Alkartasuna, Aralar and Alternativa) in the Basque Autonomous Community and the Community of Navarre: 14.78% in Navarre, 19.11% in Alava, 19.21% in Biscaye and 34.80% in Guipúzcoa.
