The Syrian people's revolution is approaching the end of its third year, still confronting the apparatus of death and destruction of the ruling dictatorial regime, in addition to numerous threats and dangers. The popular masses have made huge sacrifices in this period: in addition to over a hundred thousand number of killed, hundreds of thousands are wounded or missing, and around half the population of Syria have become internally displaced persons or refugees in neighbouring countries.

“The enemy within” and the centrist forces

The television interview given by Syrian dictator Bashar Al Assad on August 29, 2012 presented in clear terms the despotic regime's strategy against the revolution and the opposition. The messages sent to regional and international forces were also clear. The revolutionaries were no longer presented as “intruders” or “microbes” as in the past, but any Syrian citizen who did not support the regime was clearly accused of being part of an “enemy within” which should be crushed.

On March 15, 2011, a few dozen young Syrians dared to demonstrate right in the centre of the old city of Damascus, infected by the spirit of hope that had been ignited throughout the Arab world by the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions; a small demonstration of courageous young people demanding freedom for the Syrian people, who had been subjected to a regime of terror for more than 40 years

The Syrian revolution is one year old

The Syrian army moved into the district of Amro Baba in Homs on March 1 after having surrounded and bombarded it for a month. The resistance of the population was immediate, all over the country.
The oligarchy in power presented the destruction of Amro Baba as a great victory against “the terrorists”. For his part, Colonel Riad Alassad, who deserted from the Syrian army and took refuge in Turkey, spoke in the name the Free Syrian Army of “a tactical retreat”. Both sides were lying.

The relative evolution of the official discourse of the Iranian Government, the inflection of the discourse of Hezbollah and their call for dialogue between the Syrian Government and the opposition with a view to reforms, as well as the diplomatic movements, from Turkey to Qatar, passing by Russia or the Arab League with the latter's Syria initiative, raise many questions about what is happening in Syria.

A revolution on the march

Since March 15th of this year, Syria has been experiencing a popular uprising against the dictatorial regime of Bashar al Assad. Faced with peaceful demonstrations by the Syrian masses initially demanding freedom and dignity, the dictatorship has responded with a bloodthirsty and ferocious repression. The number of civilian demonstrators killed is counted in the thousands, that of the detainees and the wounded in the tens of thousands. But the higher price that the Syrian people pay for democracy and freedom in comparison with the other revolutions in the Arab countries can only increase the geographic spread of the revolution to nearly every town and visibly increase the number of those in revolt. Today the masses in the Syrian streets chant the slogan of all the Arab revolutions – the people want the fall of the regime!
