Our understanding of the term gender is that it is separate from the term sex, the latter refers to physiological features, the former to a socially constructed role. To quote Simone de Beauvoir: ‘one is not born but rather becomes a woman'. This has always been the general position of Marxist feminists – oppression is not a direct result of physiological features but the social role assigned in general to those who have those features.

The Labour Party's antisemitism witchhunt has just claimed its highest profile victim, with the sacking of Rebecca Long-Bailey from Starmer's shadow cabinet for the crime of tweeting a link to an interview with the actor Maxine Peake in the Independent. This decision, taken just a few hours after a peremptory demand by the unrepresentative Board of Deputies of British Jews, makes a mockery of Starmer's claim that he intends to “reunify” the party.

Put Labour at the head of the anti-Brexit movement

On 15 January, after two-and-a-half years of negotiations, British Prime Minister Theresa May presented her proposed withdrawal agreement from the European Union to a vote in the Westminster parliament. It was resoundingly defeated as was inevitable given the balance of forces in the parliament - which has already shown itself to be for a "soft” Brexit if not "Remain”. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, immediately tabled a motion of no confidence in the government. If a motion of no confidence wins a simple majority a new government has to be formed and win a confidence vote within fourteen days, if not a general election is automatically called.

The British Labour Party's ruling National Executive Committee (NEC) next meets on September 4. There are many crucial matters on the agenda, including which of the proposals from the Democracy review will be put to Annual Conference later in September in Liverpool. But one item will overshadow all others – whether the position on the IHRA definition of antisemitism and its associated â€˜examples' taken at the last NEC meeting will be maintained or whether the meeting will cave in in the face of relentless pressure.
