It is to the great credit of militant building workers in Australia that over 30 years ago they nailed their green colours to the mast and insisted that ecology was as much the concern of workers as wages and conditions.

The Australian Left has had a long history of fragmentation. Six months ago, there was an extraordinary breakthrough when nine socialist organisations came together to form the Socialist Alliance.

The refusal of the Australian Prime Minister to allow 450 refugees to land on Christmas Island has sparked off a furor both here and around the world. The refugees, mostly from Afghanistan, had earlier been picked up from their sinking boat in the Indian Ocean by the Norwegian freighter, the Tampa. Inevitably, comparisons have been drawn between the Tampa affair and the case of the St. Louis in 1939.

The newly formed Socialist Alliance (SA) was officially launched on April 10, 2001 at public meetings in Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest cities in Australia. Around 300 people attended the meeting at the Sydney Trades Hall. The standing-room-only Melbourne meeting attracted a similar number to the inner suburban Brunswick Town Hall. Both meetings enthusiastically backed the Alliance project and many of those who attended joined SA on the spot.

The three-day blockade of the Asia-Pacific wing of the World Economic Forum (WEF) here on September 11, 12 and 13 has been a stunning success. The blockade was organised under the general slogans of "From Seattle to Melbourne, fight corporate greed!" and "Stand up for global justice and the environment!"
