Danish RGA changes perspective

The RGA defines its task as building a new Left in opposition to Social Democracy and to the right wing. The focus will no longer be appeals to or demands towards Social Democracy, but rather building our own political and organisational alternative and taking on responsibility for building social movements.

A defeat for austerity policies but no left wing victory

The outgoing governmental coalition, headed by Social Democracy, suffered a stinging defeat in the elections on June 18. But so did the leading party of the right opposition. The winners were four different parties outside the political mainstream.

Danish Parliament discusses Catalonian independence

On May 18 a huge majority of the Danish Parliament voted for a statement saying that ”the question of Catalonian independence is a matter for peaceful and democratic dialogue between Catalonia and the Spanish government in Madrid”. All political parties - except the right wing xenophobic Danish Peoples' Party – voted for the statement after a one hour long debate that took place May 12, while voting were postponed until Tuesday the 18th.

Expenses for medicine at Danish public hospitals have doubled in only seven years. Prognoses say that in 2015 health authorities will have to allocate 1.1. billion Euro for this purpose.

The RGA against Danish fighter jets in Iraq

On 1 October, the Danish parliament approved with a huge majority to seven send F16 fighter jets and almost 300 military staff people to Iraq to participate in the US-led bombing campaign against ISIL. Only the Red Green Alliance and one unaffiliated MP voted against.

Danish socialists voting for a parliamentary decision to send a military plane to Iraq under US command is not usual. Even more unusual is the fact that I – considering myself a revolutionary Marxist – voted to support that decision. Nevertheless, that is what happened a few weeks ago.

On November 11th the Danish government and the Red-Green Alliance – at separate press conferences – announced that they had agreed on a National Budget for 2013. At a National Assembly two weeks later SAP, the Danish section of the FI, characterized this as a major mistake by the RGA.
