Deeper Grounds, Darker Shadows is the remarkable memoir of Eddie L. Quitoriano, a Filipino revolutionary who traveled across four different continents to find support for the struggle in his home-country. A book filled with stories of subterfuge and encounters with outlaws and dictators, it sheds new light on the history of the Maoist Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the limitations of its revolutionary strategy.

On 6 November, our friend and comrade Paul Mepschen passed away, far too young. For many years, Paul had been one of the central people in SAP, the Dutch section of the Fourth International. He was a dedicated socialist and scholar whose work and life revolved around emancipation. Paul's warm and sympathetic personality will be missed by many.

On October 29 the Netherlands will have parliamentary elections, again. In early June, the government of prime-minster Dick Schoof lost its majority as the far-right PVV of Geert Wilders blew up the coalition. Shortly before the elections, the contrast between the most important political events in the Netherlands could hardly be sharper. On 20 September, after an anti-immigration rally, fascists rioted in The Hague. On October 5, a quarter of a million people marched through the streets of Amsterdam to show their solidarity with Palestine.

Sixty years ago, on October 1, 1965 the Indonesian army set in motion its plans to seize power from president Sukarno and to destroy the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), one of the main forces supporting the president. In the article below, dated November 1965, Mandel criticized the political approach of the PKI in the preceding period.

The June 1960 arrests of Michel ‘Pablo' Raptis and his Dutch comrade Sal Santen in Amsterdam triggered a series of revelations regarding the Algeria-solidarity of Fourth International members. Together with a small number of comrades Raptis and Santen organised material support for the Algerian struggle against French colonialism. One aspect of this work was especially controversial: the plan to counterfeit money. The ‘Raptis and Santen case' led to fierce conflicts within the leadership of (…)
