Series of by-elections held

On April 1 by-elections were held in Burma to fill 48 vacant seats in Parliament. The National League for Democracy (LND) led by the Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi won 43 out of the 44 seats that it contested. The result was greeted unanimously by the international press as a victory for democracy.

According to Muhammad Yunus, the pioneer of microcredit, and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, microcredit should relegate poverty to history.

What new wind is blowing in Burma?

What is happening in Burma? On January 12 a presidential amnesty led to the release of approximately 300 political prisoners. A strong gesture which seems to want to send a message to the country and to the international community that Burma is taking the road of democracy. This announcement comes in a political context of significant change on at least three levels: the political scene and relations with the opposition; the question of the armed ethnic groups who are at war with the Burmese state; and international relations.

The association, Europe solidaire sans frontières, initiated three financial solidarity campaigns in 2011 (Japan, Pakistan and the Philippines). We are presenting below the financial situation of the first, launched aftere the terrible disaster on the 11th of March – earthquake, tsunami and the Fukushima nuclear disaster – in the Northeastern region. Financial update of the 2011 Pakistan Solidarity Campaign

As of January 10, 2012, six thousand seventy-five (6075) euros were collected and five thousand nine hundred (5900) euros were sent in the framework of the ongoing solidarity campaign for Pakistan. The donations were transferred through the Pakistani organization, Labour Education Foundation (LEF) with which ESSF has been collaborating for a long time now for various solidarity initiatives.

Thailand: floods and reforms

Three months after the elections which gave her a crushing victory, Yingluck Shinawatra, the leader of the Puea Thai party and the first woman Prime Minister of Thailand has had to face the worst floods since 1942. Since the beginning of the monsoon in late July, around two and a half million people have been affected by the floods in 28 provinces in the North and Centre of the country. More than 400 people have died and thousands of others have fallen ill.
