Anticapitalistas leave Podemos

On 14 May 2020, Anticapitalistas, a founding component of Podemos and historical current of the radical left in the Spanish state linked to the Fourth International, announced its departure from Podemos. In reality, this decision was taken on 28 March when, in an internal consultation process in which 79% of activists participated, 89% voted in favour of leaving Podemos (3% against and 7.5% abstentions). The advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, which hit the Spanish state hard and in particular the most vulnerable sectors of the popular classes, led to the public announcement of this decision being postponed.

The negotiations between the PSOE and Unidas Podemos to form a government and a programme continue away from the media, while, in parallel, the Socialists work to obtain the necessary support to carry out the investiture before Christmas.

The irregular landscape of houses, the result of the devastation caused by successive earthquakes, houses an immense city with suburbs where 20 million people live. It was the refuge of some of the greatest writers, painters and poets of the last century. A place of welcome for thousands of republicans who fled from fascism after the Spanish civil war. And also, the only country on the “planet without a visa” that had the courage to accept Leon Trotsky's request for asylum.

Some quick notes on the outcome of the Catalan elections

1. The big loser in the snap regional elections held in Catalonia on December 21, 2017 is the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. He dismissed the democratically elected Catalan government and dissolved the parliament through Article 155, then convened an election to destroy the pro-independence majority and strengthen his position. He didn't succeed in either goal.

Podemos-PSOE agreement: a historic error!

The Cortès of Castilla-La Mancha (CLM) has three parliamentary groups: that of the PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero EspaÃ±ol), with 15 deputies, that of the PP (Partido Popular) with 16 and that of Podemos with 2. Podemos's support is indispensable for the adoption of the budget or of any law if the PP is opposed. The two Podemos deputies are the regional secretary José GarcÃa Molina, favourable to entry into government and David Llorente, a member of the Anticapitalistas current of Podemos, who opposes such an entry.

The holding of new elections is already a real possibility [1]. The parliamentary arithmetic has produced what we saw: several months of staged negotiations, during which the population passively watched the show and the precariousness of daily life continued as if nothing had happened. There was not the least improvement in the situation of workers: it is clear that if we let those above negotiate, without those below moving, very little will change.
