New Beginnings

Sinistra Critica in Italy has been dissolved to give birth to two new political projects. This article “New Beginnings” is a translation of the final statement of Sinistra Critica national coordination (the Italian original is on the Sinistra Critica site). Different approaches and criteria can be used to take a position regarding what happened on the 15th October. We are not really interested in a debate about whether people were â€˜violent' or whether there was a conspiracy or counter-posing the â€˜good guys' to the â€˜bad' ones. Our approach and overall perspective is to place ourselves totally within the movement that we want to build and to take seriously its potential, its development, its effectiveness and above all its capacity to take decisions democratically – to self-organise. This is the central aspect to our thoughts on these events. The potential development of the movement suffered a significant defeat on the 15th October.

The Berlusconi government's decision to bring forward their austerity measures , in response to the diktat of the ECB (European Central Bank) and the â€˜international markets' shows up the hypocrisy and platitudes of recent months – the economic crisis reveals its true face as yet another massacre of people's living standards. It is caused by the unfettered drive for profits of a blocked capitalism that is neither able to guarantee our well being nor give us a dignified future.

One just has to look at what is happening in Lampedusa to see the hypocrisy of the war manoeuvres in Libya. Western governments, led by France, the USA, Great Britain and followed by Italy, have been ready to bomb in order to protect the Arab people from Gaddafi's dictatorship. This is the same dictatorship, which the West had praised, recognised and sold arms to, in exchange for generous, guaranteed contracts for energy resources and assurances over the control of migration from Africa. Gaddafi out! No to imperialist military intervention!

The Libyan dictatorship's brutal repression against the people's revolution provides the best excuse for imperialist military intervention which has the effect of holding back the unfolding revolutionary process throughout the Arab world. The â€˜no-fly' zone decided by the UN Security Council has come after Gaddafi had been allowed to re-take a large part of the liberated area.
