The others, resigned to their fate, learn to live in appalling conditions. Since the closure of the Balkan route, Serbia has established itself as Europe's border guard.

The streets against the regime in Serbia: one year of mobilization in review

For a year now, young people in Serbia have been continuing their fight for a democratic society in the face of Aleksandar Vučić's authoritarian regime. On both sides of Serbia, student marches are criss-crossing the country in the direction of Novi Sad to commemorate the collapse of the railway station, responsible for the deaths of 16 people on 1 November 2024. This tragic event triggered a political protest on an unprecedented scale.

Since November 2024, Serbian students have been leading an unprecedented revolt against Vučić's corrupt government. Along with two Belgian comrades from the Gauche Anticapitaliste, I went to Belgrade to meet them.
In front of Belgrade's Faculty of Philosophy, a table and camping chairs were set up. A dozen or so students wrapped up in duvets were watching the entrance. On the table were sudokus and packets of cigarettes to pass the time. The students take 8am shifts to secure the faculty, (…)
