Abolish the police?

The French “mainstream media” has not exactly relayed this, but a demand has made its way from across the Atlantic, thanks to historic mobilizations against racism and police violence: that of the abolition of the police. This slogan, which was the prerogative of some small groups who in general also advocated the abolition of prisons, is today discussed in increasingly broad circles and is now the subject of a national campaign: #8to-Abolition. This obviously remains a minority phenomenon, but it has taken on a scale that no one could have suspected a few weeks ago, and raises for public debate a question whose radicalism is only matched by its simplicity: should we abolish the police?

The “Trump plan” for the Middle East, pompously dubbed the “Deal of the Century”, immediately appeared for what it was: a plan to recognize a colonial fait accompli, with complete alignment on the positions of the Israeli right. The fact that it was rejected by all Palestinian forces and by the Arab League is not a surprise, as the content of this “plan” is outrageously favourable to Israel and tramples on all Palestinian national rights. It remains to be seen what consequences Trump's proposals could have, more than 26 years after the Oslo Agreement, launched with great fanfare, of the “peace process” - whose bankruptcy is well established.

First in terms of participation, with estimates of between 13,500 and 40,000 people marching through the streets of Paris, with other gatherings and events in the regions. A political success also, with for the first time a mobilization against Islamophobia bringing together Muslim associations, organizations from the popular neighbourhoods and left wing social and political groupings.

The insurrectional process that opened in the Middle East-North Africa region in the winter of 2010-2011 is far from complete, although it is clear, and the year 2018 has unfortunately again illustrated it, that the counter-revolutionary forces, supported by their imperialist allies, are still on the offensive.
