Hands off Greece, fighting back and resisting

Even before the dissolution of the Greek parliament and the ensuing electoral campaign, International and European powers have launched a campaign of lies and threats aimed at cowering the Greek electorate away from voting for SYRIZA (United Social Front) in the upcoming general election to take place on 25 January. Seconded by the mainstream European media, the “leaders”, Juncker, Merkel, Hollande, Renzi, or SchÃ¤uble, are preparing yet another brutal intervention into Greece's home affairs, a country they have already turned into a mess of social ruin through the inhuman and barbarous austerity policies they have dictated.

Responding to direct racist threats from the nazi party Golden Dawn against one of the founding members of CADTM Greece Moisis Litsis, the international CADTM network wishes to highlight how serious a danger the rise of fascism is, a development that is the direct consequence of the deterioration of social conditions imposed by creditors claiming that paying public debts is more important than fundamental human rights.

The CADTM downgrades its IMF rating and places this institution on very negative outlook

The Committee for the Abolition of Third World Debt www.cadtm.org has decided to downgrade the IMF's rating due to this institution's heavy share of responsibility for the deterioration of people's living standards in countries subjected to austerity policies it has openly imposed or dictated from behind the scenes. The resulting high levels of unemployment, aggravation of the crisis and the increase in public debt of the States following its counter productive and unjust recommendations justify downgrading the IMF's rating from NNN to NO- with a further very negative outlook.

Declaration from the Athens Conference on Debt and Austerity

CADTM denounces the attempted coup in Ecuador

On Thursday 30 September an attempted coup took place in Ecuador. Rebel units of the national police abducted president Rafael Correa after he urged policemen to accept the law on public services which had been adopted at its first reading by the national assembly on 29 September 2010. The aim of this law is to end certain financial benefits enjoyed by police and armed forces

On Friday 28 May 2010, in the late afternoon, Denise died suddenly following a heart attack in a Brussels street as she walked to the railway station to catch a train back to Liège after participating in a Forum on the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of the Democratic Republic of Congo. During this activity in support of the Congolese people, she had again been outstanding for her impassioned speeches and infectious good humour.

The future of the World Social Forum after Nairobi

The 7th WSF ended on 25 January in the Kenyan capital. It was followed by a two-day meeting of the International Council (IC), a decision-making body consisting of about one hundred organizations from all continents. After a first contradictory assessment of the forum, the IC confirmed its decision to launch a global Day of Action towards the end of January 2008.

G8 meanness over the debt

On June 11 the meeting of the G8 Finance ministers resulted in bombastic statements about a "historic" cancellation of the debt burdening poorer countries. CADTM is suspicious of such dramatic gestures which so far have led only to cosmetic cancellations.
