Fatal Flaws in UK-Mauritius “Joint Statement” on planned Treaty on Chagos

The “Joint Statement” that Pravind Jugnauth and Keir Starmer have concocted is obviously riddled with fatal flaws for Mauritius' future. It is dangerous on all the main issues: decolonization, closing the USA's military base, the elementary right to free movement over all the land and sea for all Mauritians including Chagossians, and thus the right to return for Chagossians. It is even a blow to Mauritian sovereignty, itself. So, the Treaty must be opposed. LALIT now puts the following issue on the agenda for the general elections: Full sovereignty to be exercised democratically over Chagos, and a date for base closure and clean-up! No to militarism! No to prolonged occupation or colonization!

Britain Slammed in UN Court Judgment over Illegal Occupation of Chagos and Diego Garcia

On 25 February 2019, the International Court of Justice at The Hague found that Britain had acted unlawfully in its decolonization of Mauritius.
It found that the excision of part of Mauritius, the Chagos Archipelago including Diego Garcia which the UK then sub-let to the US military, was unlawful.

Britain Exposed in U.N. Court hearing for illegal detachment of Chagos from rest of Mauritius

An absolutely riveting case was before the United Nation's court, the International Court of Justice at The Hague, last week. How could a court case 50 years after the events, in what is usually the dry legalistic argumentation of the most arcane kind about international law, be “riveting” by any stretch of the imagination, let alone “absolutely riveting”?

US military base on Diego Garcia must be closed!

For 42 years now, LALIT has mobilized on the three closely intertwined demands on this issue:

– Decolonization of the Chagos Islands, illegally split off from Mauritius by Britain at Independence in 1968.

– Closure of the US military base on one of the islands, Diego Garcia.

– The right of return, heads held high, of all Chagossians, as Mauritians, with proper reparations.

Our mass mobilizations of the 1970s and 1980s have helped keep the struggle against military occupation on the agenda until now. Lalit never gave up on any of the three. Why should we?
