On 3 January 2026, the United States launched a military operation against Venezuela, resulting in the capture and detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and their transfer to the United States. During this attack, carried out using 150 aircraft, around a hundred people lost their lives, including 32 Cubans who had attempted to protect the country's presidential palace; the remaining victims were Venezuelans. A few hours after this intervention, Donald Trump announced that Washington now claimed to be temporarily in control of Venezuela and would exploit its oil resources.

We are reprinting an important text that Ernest Mandel wrote in late 1963 to contribute to the public debate that had begun in Cuba a few months earlier. The main participants in the debate were, on the one hand, Ernesto Che Guevara (Minister of Industry) and Luis Álvarez Rom (Minister of Finance) and, on the other, Alberto Mora (Minister of Foreign Trade) and Marcelo Fernández Font (President of the National Bank of Cuba).
At the Cubans' request, two foreign Marxist economists joined the (…)

“It is through all these events that the alliances necessary to counter fascism and imperialism are being forged. It is up to us to involve the trade unions, human rights organizations, feminist and LGBTQI+ movements, anti-racist organizations, those campaigning for Palestine, and those standing in solidarity with the Ukrainian and the Iranian people. It is in this way – and by defending our eco-socialist revolutionary perspectives – that we will build the movement needed to change the world.”

In September 2025, after having presided over the country since December 2023, the neo-fascist Javier Milei suffered an electoral defeat in an important vote. The result was the election in the province of Buenos Aires. This election renewed 46 seats in the provincial Chamber of Deputies and 23 in the provincial Senate. The Peronist opposition beat Milei's party by 13 points and holds a majority in the Buenos Aires Provincial Senate. The capital province represents about 37-38% of the national electorate. The provincial elections in Buenos Aires always serve as a major test at the national level, including for Javier Milei this year.

However, the facts speak for themselves: at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro (6–7 July 2025), no real desire to break away from the US currency was expressed. De-dollarisation remains a distant prospect.

Éric Toussaint looks back at the situation in Sri Lanka since 2022. From popular revolts to the new centre-left government elected at the end of 2024, including negotiations with creditors, this overview provides a better understanding of the situation, rich in lessons, in a country whose social, economic and political situation is largely unknown. Éric Toussaint compares what is happening in Sri Lanka with what happened in Greece in 2015 and in Argentina between 2019 and 2023, putting into perspective the risk of a hard right-wing government in the future.
