Sunday, 20 July 1995, marks three decades since the death of Ernest Mandel (1923-1995) "the most creative economist of our time," in the words of the Pakistani socialist Tariq Ali. Thus ended a whole life informed by the passion of revolutionary militancy and an intense activity in the construction of Marxist organizations and of the international itself.

“Everything is moving toward the eventual establishment of a new political regime in the country. Massive and sustained popular mobilisation is what can put a stop to this reactionary process, but this must not sideline the national midterm elections next October, which are also a decisive arena for struggle.”

While some economists claim that the world economy is heading towards long-term stagnation, others claim that what we are seeing is a short cycle. Analysts of the world economy are divided between those who foresee a recession and those who think it is just a question of controlling a slowdown. There is a another, underlying, debate: are we seeing long-term stagnation or are the conditions of a new wave of expansion already foreshadowed?

The revolt of women continues its walk without pause, now the legalisation of elective abortion has been voted through by the chamber of deputies and will be voted on by the Senate. (After this article was written, legalisation was voted down in the Senate by 38 votes to 31.) For dogmatic morals the eruption of the younger generations marks a before and after.

The Argentine legislative elections in August and October 2017 will be of huge importance for the entire Latin American region, with the government of Mauricio Macri establishing itself as a bastion of the neoliberal right after 12 years of Kirchnerist government (2003-2015). The coming elections represent a central challenge for the three forces which with varying degrees of importance structure the country's political landscape: the right and the forces around Macri, Peronism and the forces around Kirchnerism, and the Trotskyist and anti-capitalist movements. In this context, Frank Gaudichaud spoke to two well known Argentine left activists, Claudio Katz and Eduardo Lucita.

Since winning last year's presidential election in Argentina, the conservative Mauricio Macri has carried out an onslaught against the working class and social movements. His drive to impose neoliberal austerity measures and to escalate repression against dissent has led to wide discontent and signs of a revived resistance, but the left has crucial questions to answer in order to build an opposition that can turn the tide.
