After Sunday night, when many people feared that there might be a crackdown on the protests after following several pleas for protesters to leave the sites and the government's warning that civil servants must be able to return to work the next day, this week the protests have nevertheless continued. While the numbers taking part have fallen – unlike last week, this week is a regular working week – many of the protesters still remain very determined. Talks between the Students' Federation and the government which had been scheduled for Friday were canceled by the government. Meanwhile pro-Beijing groups have continued to try to disrupt the protesters, although not on the same scale as last Friday.

After the attacks of yesterday and further threats by anti-Occupy groups to attack the protesters, large numbers have still turned out today undeterred. One pro-Beijing group, Caring Hong Kong Power, had earlier put out a call to its members to again go to Mong Kok. The message says that the use of violence against the protesters is necessary and that if necessary the PLA should be mobilised.

Today Hong Kong university students marked the beginning of their week long class boycott for democracy by holding a large rally organised at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The students are boycotting classes this week in protest against the decision made by Chinese Communist Party at the end of last month to refuse to grant Hong Kong full universal suffrage and instead require that candidates for the city's Chief Executive be selected by a 1200 person nomination committee.

The number of cases of resistance in China continues to grow. Protests both large and small are an extremely frequent occurrence in China. They range in scale and nature from workers' protests against unpaid wages or demands for increasing labour rights, to protests against corrupt officials or environmental protests. While protests have often been brought to a swift end via repressive means, struggles have also frequently led to concessions being granted to the protestors, as the party-state will adopt different means by which to limit social unrest and restore “social harmony”.
